Simon Hoermann is an Associate Professor at the University of Canterbury's School of Product Design (New Zealand). His research focuses on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), particularly in the areas of transformational computing for health and learning applications. He explores how technology and game design can enhance user experiences and help individuals with disabilities achieve their full potential. He received a B.Sc and M.Sc in Computer Science from the University of Bozen (Italy) and a PhD from the University of Otago (New Zealand).
Research Endeavours
He explores the intricate intersection of technology and game design, aiming to deepen our understanding of how these elements can synergistically enhance user experiences—specializing in game design and development, user-centered engineering, human interface technology, and applied game design. He focuses mainly on health and well-being applications. Within the scope of game development research, he engages with game developers worldwide, embarking on projects incorporating end-user feedback. In emergency training, he has spearheaded the creation of virtual reality simulations in collaboration with Fire and Emergency New Zealand, targeting essential skills such as wildfire suppression and stress management. His endeavors in neurorehabilitation have led him to collaborate with healthcare professionals and patients on pioneering technologies like Augmented Reflection Technology and TheraMem, a game designed to assist in the recovery process for stroke survivors. Furthermore, his work in mental health has involved developing augmented intelligence systems to aid moderators of online communities, aiming to provide support for young individuals facing challenging situations.
