Karsten is an independent software developer, generative designer, artist and prolific open-source author. Starting in the depths of the early Atari 8-bit demo scene, he has acquired a transdisciplinary way of working over the last 30 years and has practically applied this mix together with and for a wide range of collaborators, clients and brands, including most recently in a senior role at Nike (2016-2021). In the past, he has also consulted, written, and taught workshops internationally on topics such as creative coding, generative design, interaction design, functional programming, data visualization, code literacy, and open source culture.
He is the author of more than 250 open source projects, has contributed to other major projects (including Processing and Clojure), and has contributed to books on programming and digital design. His work has been nominated for, won, and exhibited internationally for several international design awards, including at the Museum of Modern Art New York, Whitney New York, the Science Museum, Design Museum, Barbican Centre, Victoria & Albert Museum (all London), Tekniska Museet Stockholm, Onassis Cultural Centre Athens, Design Museum Holon, and CAFA Art Museum Beijing.
